Live Openly

This week's mindful mantra is about an ultimate freedom from constraints, worries or predictions. Being open involves a complete acceptance to the moment, allowing what ever unfolds to unfold. By giving yourself up in this way you allow yourself to strip away your negative reactions to all those unpredictable moments that we encounter as parents. In doing so, you open up a judgment-free play zone with your little one, allowing their natural reactions to come uninfluenced and uninterrupted by our own.

This is not to say that at all times you should be holding back your own feelings. By being open in this way we are focusing our attention on the present moment and purposefully aiming to become an observer rather than a modeller. If something breaks or goes awry it is always ok to voice your feelings. Name them, show them how they make you feel. In this way you are still being open, and true to yourself, you are just in a position of modelling rather than a position of observer. A balance between both roles is most ideal when parenting openly.

Living openly is also about being there to receive love from everywhere and everyone you interact with. Being open to exchanging love in all that you do and in all that you are. Modelling love in this way is all about treating people with common respect and dignity. Having pleasant interactions with the cashier at the grocery store or the gas tenant at the gas station shows our children that all people, not just family and friends, deserve to be spoken to nicely and sincerely. In this way, we show our children what it means to be a kind and compassionate person of the community.

I hope that you take some time this week to think about what it means in your home, in your life and in your play to live openly. Watch how this bright energy and attention not only spreads to our children, but out into our community as well.
